Fashion and Beauty Tips for the Trans Women

You’ve lived a portion of your life as a man and now you’re finally a woman. That’s great. But even the best of us struggle with finding the perfect outfits and the best makeup looks for certain occasions. Here are a few tips that are sure to help every Trans Women out there:

DOS

• Dress Your Age

You may be tempted to compensate for years lived as male but if you want to be respected as a woman you will have to dress according to your age. Therefore, if you are approaching 40 you should not be wearing jeans shorts and crop tops like a teenage girl. Women around this age are usually more refined and dress as such.

• Use Concealer

If you are still transitioning but desire to wear makeup concealer should be your best friend. A good quality concealer will hide your aftershave, the bags under your eyes and any other feature that risks you looking more masculine than feminine.

• Ask Sales Clerks for Their Opinion on Anything Before you Buy It

If you are uncertain about how an outfit looks it is best to consult the sales clerk before making a purchase. These persons are usually competent enough to determine whether a certain outfit is a good look for an individual based on factors such as height, shape, age, skin tone, etc.

• Research

If you want to be on top of the latest fashion trends and styles you will have to do your research. This involves following up fashion icons and websites both trans women and cis women. A great place to start is Instagram and Pinterest.

DON'TS

• Don't be Afraid to Try New Things

If you are comfortable in your own skin, you should not be afraid to try new things. After all, that is what fashion is all about: mixing and matching styles and patterns you haven’t thought of before and being bold in what you decide to wear. Be mindful however of the situations you are in and carefully consider if such an outfit would be appropriate for such an event.

• Don't Contour

Every makeup guru you watch down to teens in high school are highlighting and contouring when doing their makeup. But this doesn’t mean that you should. Contouring can do more harm than good especially if your features have not been softened by hormones or fillers. Contouring will highlight your bone structure giving you a more masculine finish. Instead, replace your contour with highlight to make your face appear softer and more feminine.

•• Don't Overdo It on the Makeup

Makeup should be used in moderation unless you are trying to hide unsightly scars or birthmarks or to color correct. If you overdo it on the makeup you risk looking more like a drag queen than a woman of stature and chances are you probably won’t be taken very seriously.

• Don't Mix Prints, Whites or Blacks

A very simple rule for every girl to live by when it comes to everyday fashion is “Don’t mix prints, whites or blacks”. As it relates to whites and blacks, it is very hard to find two pieces of clothing that are the same shade of white or black (unless they are a part of a set) and chances are that one will throw the other off. (This does not mean they cannot mix well but you are safer avoiding that risk). Mixing prints can be very disastrous if not done correctly and chances are two unique prints will not go together. Always say no to mixing stripes and polka dots or lines and squares. This will save you from committing a fashion sin.
